Following on from my previous post, the devices I’m considering must at least be equal to, if not better than, the benchmark set by my current device, the HTC Desire Eye. That means I’m not considering any devices that fall below that threshold. I realise that’s a big chunk of devices, but if it came to a compromise that substantial, I’d rather keep what I’ve got as my daily driver. That said, I will consider one or two devices that fall below this benchmark, but only if they dress to impress in other areas.
The kind of phone I’m looking at should have a HD display with a high PPI count; a fairly snappy processor that can keep up with me; a phone with a battery that can last through the day with little to no topping-up but that also supports quick or fast charging if needs be; at least 2gb RAM for multitasking; a screen size no more than 5.2 inches (I already have to perform some finger gymnastics with my Desire Eye); at least 32gb internal storage (I’m struggling with 16gb as a lot of apps don’t work or allow you to move to SD card); and last but not least, a decent camera that can compete alongside an iPhone.
While I realise what I’ve just specified is the Perfect Phone that probably doesn’t exist, I think it’s important to set out just what it is I’m looking for, so that I can then look at the specs of other phones and compare and contrast them with my current device.
Just so it’s clear from the outset, unlike others, I am not loyal to any one brand. If I think another phone can give me more bang for my buck, don’t expect me to side with HTC because I’m a loyal fanboy. That said, I did look at the new HTC 10 as well as the A9s, Desire 10 Pro and Desire 10 Lifestyle.
I shall also only consider those devices which are available on contract here in the UK – I would rather get a phone on contract than buy a phone and then get a SIM only deal (even if the latter method is cheaper).
What I have noticed, on first glance, is that even some of the cheaper phones are aiming to compete with the more premium phones – Alcatel’s Idol 3, for example, comes with a 13mp rear shooter and 8mp front camera, 16gb or 32gb of internal storage expandable thanks to micro SD, 2gb RAM, a 5.5″ IPS LCD screen at 1920 x 1080 pixels with 401ppi, and a 2,910mAh battery.
While that’s not as eye-watering as the specs of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, Huawei P9/Honor 8, Moto X Force, LG G5 or Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, what it does show is that you can at least get a comparable device at half the price (as it rhymes, maybe that should be Alcatel’s slogan?).
Therefore, I will consider some of the devices in the lower or mid-range tier that, while they aren’t as premium, they certainly give the top dogs a run for their money.
